AIRPLANES: GROUND, BOEING FEAF BOMBER COMMAND, JAPAN ?? In twilight takeoff lineup, an Armed Forces Day symbol of the big UN air effort in Korea, all?weather U.S. Air Force B?29 warcraft of the 98th Bomb Wing in Japan are ready to begin another night attack against targets in Communist?held North Korea. The four engines of each of the three bombers in the background roar with life, their propellers slicing powerfully through the air, while in the foreground the long black tail of a fourth "Superfort," guns loaded and ready, is seen in silhouette. Not a night has passed during the last seven months without one or more FEAF Bomber Command "Superforts" striking Red targets. In over 34 months of combat operations, B?29s from both Japan and Okinawa have slammed more than 312,000,000 (m) pounds of high explosives into enemy industrial supply and troop centers, transportation networks and frontline positions. The 11?man "Superforts" have been the "heavy weights" of the Korean air war, flying more than 17,000 combat sorties against the enemy. May 1953.
